On April 29, Chengdu-Chongqing Area World-class Airport Cluster Construction Workshop was held in Chongqing, to discuss the three important questions of “why, what and how” related to the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing area world-class airport cluster. CAAC Administrator Feng Zhenglin pointed out at the workshop that it is a responsibility of the times and a historical mission to build the Chengdu-Chongqing area world-class airport cluster, which requires integrated planning, harmonized coordination, constant exploration and innovative reform, so that we can build a world-class airport cluster that would make best of its role as a strategic trail blazer, help improve and upgrade modern industrial chain, enhance hub distribution and extend air network coverage. CAAC Deputy Administrator Dong Zhiyi presided over the workshop, and Chongqing Vice Mayor Zheng Xiangdong attended and addressed the meeting.
The two core hubs, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, total an annual passenger throughput of over 100 million with annual cargo and mail turnover also exceeding 1 million tons, accounting for 88.6% and 90.8% among airports in Chengdu-Chongqing area. Between 2016 and 2019, the two hubs registered a 10.5% average annual growth rate for passenger throughput, and 7.3% for cargo and mail turnover, both exceeding other three major airport clusters. The number of domestic routes served at the two hubs has increased to 503, connecting up to 184 cities and covering 78.1% of airports in China. The two hubs also serve 241 international and regional passenger routes and 59 international and regional cargo routes.
