China’s Air Transport Gets Off a Good Start in the First Quarter, with Record-High Traffics of Passenger and Cargo and Mail30/04/2024
In the first quarter of 2024, China’s air transport got off a good start, with the traffics of passenger and cargo and mail both registering a record high in the history of the same period. The industry recorded a total transport turnover of 34.93 billion ton-km, up by 45.6% year-on-year and 12.9% compared to the same period in 2019, with a transport turnover of 23.86 billion ton-km over domestic routes and 11.07 billion ton-km over international routes.
In the first quarter of 2024, passenger traffic reached nearly 180 million, up by 37.7% year on year and 10.2 % compared to the same period in 2019, with 160 million carried on domestic routes, an increase of 14.3% compared to the same period in 2019, and 14.12 million on international routes, which was 78.0% of the level recorded in the same period of 2019. 
In terms of cargo and mail, a total of 2.007 million tons were transported, up by 34.4% year-on-year and 19.6% compared to the same period in 2019, with 1.232 million tons over domestic routes and 775 000 tons over international routes, representing increases of 8.2% and 43.6% compared to the same period in 2019 respectively.
In March, the industry transported a total of 54.73 million passengers and 708 000 tons of cargo and mail, representing a year-on-year increase of 25.7% and 28.2% respectively, and an increase of 7.3% and 12.3% compared to the same period in 2019 respectively.
