ICAO and Its Member States Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Signing of the International Civil Aviation Convention19/12/2024
December 7 represents the International Civil Aviation Day. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the International Civil Aviation Convention (hereinafter referred to as the Convention). In order to commemorate this milestone event, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its member states held various commemorative activities to review the far-reaching impacts of the Convention on the development of global civil aviation, and build consensus and charter for the continuous progress of the civil aviation industry in the future. CAAC, in cooperation with the ICAO Asia-Pacific Regional Sub-Office and the United Nations in China, organized a series of communication, lectures and commemorative activities for diplomats from countries in the Asia-Pacific region, leaders of Chinese offices of international organizations, civil aviation organizations, future civil aviation professionals and the public.
China, as a founding and contracting member of the Convention, became a formal member of ICAO in 1946 and was elected as a Part II member state in 1947. In November 1971, the ICAO Council adopted a resolution recognizing the representative of the Government of the Peoples Republic of China as the sole legal representative of China at ICAO. In September 1974, at the 21st Session of ICAO Assembly, China was re-elected as the Part II member of ICAO Council. In 2004, at the 35th Session of ICAO Assembly, China was elected as a Part I member of ICAO Council with high votes, and has been re-elected ever since. China has always adhered to the purposes and principles of the International Civil Aviation Convention, actively honored its obligations as a member state. China is deeply involved in global civil aviation governance, committed to promoting common development, safeguarding universal security and contributing to the safe, orderly and sustainable development of global civil aviation.
The recent series of activities held by ICAO and its member states are not only grand commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Convention, but also a reflection of their confidence and expectation for the future development of international civil aviation. Under the guidance of the Convention, ICAO and its member states will continue to work together to create a better future for global civil aviation, promote economic growth and improve the peoples welfare around the world.
