On the morning of August 28, a symposium celebrating the 60th anniversary of civil aviation operations in Tibet was held at Lhasa Gonggar International Airport. At the symposium, participants listened to the congratulatory letters from the Party Committee and Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Party Leadership Group of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in celebration of the 60th anniversary of civil aviation operations in Tibet. Wei Xiuchang, Vice Chairman of the People's Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region, and Liang Nan, Deputy Administrator of CAAC, attended and addressed the symposium.
Over the past 60 years, the civil aviation industry in Tibet has overcome the geographic barriers at the plateau and continuously expanded its route network, resulting in a "1+7" airport system with Lhasa Gonggar Airport as the hub supported by seven regional airports including Qamdo Bangda Airport and Nyingchi Mainling Airport. The number of routes has increased from 1 to 193, that of flights from 2 per month to over 230 per day, and that of cities served from 1 to 81. In 2024, the passenger throughput in the Tibet Autonomous Region reached 7.6 million, which is 3,523 times the figure recorded in 1965.
